Science communication is not something that should be thought of in the end of a research process, as is still a widespread belief in many fields. Visualisations as a research method and tool, along with art-based research, have proven to be effective in stimulating social learning processes, particularly in transdisciplinary settings.

To fuel learning across disciplines and sectors while encouraging citizen engagement and pluralism of ideas regarding future urban spaces, as well as stimulate attractive learning environments, SMUS will put out calls for contributions for Sci-Com Projects to the SMUS partner universities. The formats of these projects can be, but are not limited to MOOCs, podcasts, photography, videography, urban stories, blogs, graphic illustrations, critical mappings, local public events (e.g. public lecture series, exhibitions), urban interventions, etc.
Our starting point is the understanding that communication is a multidirectional dialogue, a two-footed practice, pivoting on production and presentation of content and media (i.e., the visualisation of information); as well as the interaction of stakeholders and exchange of information (i.e., participatory formats) for the purpose of constructive deliberation. We will focus on the visualisation and communication of research outcomes, on making findings accessible for debate by enabling participation and negotiation processes (both within SMUS as well as with third-party stakeholders and the general public), and on creating opportunities to cooperate in a transdisciplinary peer-learning environment for co-creation.
