Based on an extended literature review of ecotone and its derivatives, this timeline traces how the concept travelled from its orginating discipline "ecology", across disciplines including sociology, anthropology, urban studies, and the arts. Starting from ecological boundary theory, ecotone gradually expanded definitions into a wider framework for understanding transition zones, hybrid spaces, and encounters between different systems.
