

In the run-up to the Regional Campus Asia, the SMUS team at Universitas Diponegoro, held a kick-off event and prepared the grounds in Semarang, Indonesia. They explored Blurring Boundaries: the role of EC(h)OTONES in shaping urban sustainability, through a lectures series, a field visit, a workshop, a kick-off event, and an exhibtion.
The lecture series introduced key theoretical perspectives and served as the conceptual foundation for the following activities.
The site visit was conducted in the Wonorejo and Timbulsloko Hamlets (Timbulsloko Village, Sayung, Demak, Indonesia), and aimed to provide participants with first-hand exposure to ecotone dynamics and community adaptation practices. Participants observed mangrove rehabilitation efforts and hybrid engineering structures that were developed collaboratively among stakeholders. They also had Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with local communities to capture local knowledge and lived experiences of environmental transition and transformation.








After a smaller workshop that functioned as a platform for reflection and synthesis of insights gained from previous activities, in the flagship kick-off event, these preliminary findings were presented and discussed with a broader audience of students, lecturers, the general public, and representatives from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), GIZ, and the German Embassy. The discourse on EC(h)OTONES and their role in addressing wicked urban problems was disseminated more broadly, fostering cross-sectoral dialogue and knowledge exchange.

In parallel, the SMUS team from Universitas Deponegoro developed a Sci-Com project which was designed to visualise the shifting dynamics and adaptation measures to wicked urban problems in the Semarang-Demak coastal ecotone areas. The project employed temporal storytelling using digital interactive platforms and created an ec(h)otone time map, a video, and 3 virtual reality (VR) experiences.
