

This video EC(h)OTONES co-creation: bridging natural and built environment in the North Coast of Java, Indonesia (ECoast) developed at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Diponegoro University, is a reflective learning tool that helps viewers better understand the socio-ecological transitions unfolding within the area. Building upon the concept of EC(h)OTONING, which extends the use of ecotones as a lens for identifying wicked urban problems (WUP), it explores the dynamic transformations occurring at the land–sea interface and invites viewers to reflect on the interconnected relationships between natural and built environments, and the challenges of living within these rapidly changing coastal landscapes.

Rapid urbanisation driven by Semarang’s role as an economic hub has intensified pressures on land, water, and housing, leading to land conversion, environmental degradation, infrastructure damage, and livelihood shifts. These actions significantly affect the Demak coastal area. While climate change and sea level rise affect coastal EC(h)OTONES in general, the dynamics and impacts in Semarang and Demak differ due to their distinct regional characteristics and vulnerabilities. Facing these various problems, residents have adopted adaptation as one of their ways to survive.
