In the run-up to the Regional Campus Latin America, the SMUS team at Universidad Veracruzana held a kick-off event and prepared the grounds in Xalapa, Mexico. They explored ECOTONOS: entre lo sólido, líquido y gaseoso (ECOTONES, between the solid, liquid and gaseous) through contagious one-to-one tactics, field workshops, and EC(h)OTONING workspaces.

The ECOTONOS kick-off event was devised as a way to introduce the SMUS II five-year action-research partnership project through this playful and aesthetic experience and collective exchanges. Divided in three different stages, we aimed at experiencing, locating and conceptualizing—both as a methodology and as a space-time specific site—the ecotones / EC(h)OTONING in the Mexican state of Veracruz. A range of locations and interests of different stakeholder were selected as a way to determine the most contagious, reverberating and adequate wicked urban problem (WUP) for the five-year project of SMUS. It functioned as a starting point for untangling intersections. The colour coded ephemeral installation was meant to spark questions concerning wicked urban problems, ecotones / EC(h)OTONING in their multiple dimensions and potentialities. The stages functioned like a building block of ant-ology strategy to slowly create a momentum and intensify the work in a free public event.

In a first stage, we conducted a series of individual and collective interviews to introduce concepts of ecotones / EC(h)OTONING. These were designed for getting on board different people—academic and other stakeholders—and learn their perspectives.
In a second stage, we conducted field workshops in different sites of the coastal region of Veracruz with groups of invited people related to the theme of transfigurative ecotones in Veracruz. Having read and talked about the different dimensions of ecotones and WUP before the walk, our experience was led to find and perceive WUP and specific ecotones within these transitional time-spaces. Using practices of creative embodiments such as walking, talking and plurisensoriality that “provide an opportunity for co-imagining as a way of inhabiting the landscape” (Bathla 2024:23), we explored San Juan de Ullua, La villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, Quiahuiztlán, Cempoala, Laguna Verde and Caballo Blanco mine. Each of these sites represent different types of intersections. During these visits we also obtained audiovisual material that was processed and used for the ephemeral installation.

In the final stage, we held a free public event in the format of an EC(h)OTONING workspace, which we define as a cosy or provoking opening place where experts, students, and interested persons could hold a presentation and a sustained dialogue that emerged from the triggering installation/exhibition and from the presentations of the different invited guests.
The launch event particularly targeted to connect:
